Description
“Sei proprio n’ebreo” is a common expression widely used in Italy to blame somebody as greedy and skinflint. It comes from an internationally diffused stereotype about Jews as thrifty people. In Italy, the contemporary use of the term Jew can be a racist synonym of greed and avarice. It appears in common language in various forms such as ebreo, giudìo, ‘nghèvero as well as in many figurative expressions that hint to somebody's Hebraic origin e.g. “rabbino” (rabbi) or traditional Jewish names as Aronne, Samuele, Abramo, Isacco, and family names as Piperno, Terracina, Di Castro, Pacifici, to point out greed and avarice (e.g. “fa’ pijà luce ar portafoglio, che te chiami Aronne Piperno?” = Let your wallet see the light, is Aronne Piperno your name?”).
